About Gilbert AZ
Gilbert is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona on the southeast portion of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Gilbert, AZ was incorporated on July 6, 1920. Gilbert was once known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World” until late 1920.
Chandler, Mesa, Phoenix, and Queen Creek border the town. Gilbert is primarily served by a portion of Loop 202, though a small section of the US 60 Superstition Freeway passes through its northern boundary with an interchange at Highley Road. Gilbert enjoys proximity to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway and Phoenix Sky Harbor International airports, both of which are within 25 minute’s drive from the town center.
Notable landmarks in Gilbert are the 9-11 Memorial at the Town Hall, made from a beam taken from the ruins in New York City, the Gilbert Regional Park, and the Desert Sky Park which was established in 2019 with multi-million dollar investments.
The town was established by its namesake, William “Bobby” Gilbert, who provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 for a line that connects Florence, Arizona, with Phoenix. By the 1920s, Gilbert was an agricultural town that benefited from the rail line and the construction of the Roosevelt Dam as well as the Eastern and Consolidated Canals. Today, Gilbert is highly regarded for its livability, safety, and quality of life based on national surveys. Gilbert Az was also hailed for being one of the best livable towns in the United States and is ranked fourth among the safest towns in the United States (out of 182 communities ranked).
